White Cross, Lancaster, UK, 30 July, 2004
White Cross is now largely divided into industrial units occupied by several small businesses, but it was built in 1802 as a steam-powered cotton mill - one can't get more stereotypically Northern than that!
With the decline of that industry in the 1840s, the mill was bought by the Storey family in 1856 and converted to manufacture oilcloth and table baize. |
