Ashton Memorial, Williamson Park, Lancaster, UK, approaching dusk, 23 September, 2004
The Memorial was designed by John Belcher and built between 1906-8 for Lord Ashton (James Williamson Jr., the linoleum magnate and Member of Parliament) as a monument to, well, himself. The original rationale for its design and construction was to commemorate his late second wife, but somehow, on completion, it became rededicated to Ashton himself. |
