A chapel covering the parish of Over Wyresdale, nowadays centred on nearby Abbeystead, is known to have existed since before 1570, but this church was built (or rebuilt?) in 1733. The current appearance, including the chancel and spire, dates from substantial 'restoration' (read: reworking) by John Douglas, funded by the Earl of Sefton, in 1894.
