This is the highest peak in Lancashire, officially at 561 m asl. Remember to climb the Stone itself, as the nearby trig. pillar isn't at the true summit – another pillar 700 m to the ENE is a metre higher. However, on top of the Stone you'll be ~1 m higher than that trig. point! Though Ward's Stone is the highest distinct peak, it's not the highest point in the county: that's Gragareth, rising to 627 m asl near Ingleton but lacking the 150 m of relative height required by the standardised definition of 'peak' i.e. in order to reach a higher point than Ward's Stone, one must first descend at least 150 m, whereas Gragareth doesn't have that topographic distinction. Spot the Ingleborough. |
