Apart from St. Leonard's church, just off the left of the image, this is the core of the scattered community, and a key junction on the Three Peaks route. The Bruntscar path from Whernside emerges from Philpin Lane, in the middle of the photo, then heads a short distance up the main road to the building with the white end wall, the Old Hill Inn. It then heads across the fields off the right of the image, to Southerscales Scars and Ingleborough.
The building with the yellowish wall, to the immediate left of the Philpin Lane junction, was the village school, which has been converted to a bunkhouse.
