Hot air balloon seen from Clougha, near Lancaster, Lancashire, UK, 16 November, 2008

The hills in the background mark the complicated junction of three counties. The visible western side of Leck Fell (aka Gragareth), on the right, is in Lancashire to its ridgeline, but the eastern side, out of view, is in North Yorkshire. At 627 m asl Gragareth is the highest point in Lancashire, but not the highest in the immediate area: Crag Hill/Great Coum, to the left, reaches 687 m, less than a kilometre into Cumbria, and Whernside, only one valley away, is the highest point in North Yorkshire.

Gragareth has a greater absolute height than Lancashire's highest distinct hill, Ward's Stone (at 561 m asl), but has a very small relative height (prominence), defined as the vertical distance one must descend to travel from the summit to any higher terrain; for Ward's Stone, that's 395 m, so it easily qualifies as a 'Marilyn'.
