Not knowing the Albert Dock complex particularly well, I presumed this was merely a channel/lock linking Salthouse Dock (behind the camera) to the river. However, it's the remnant of a named dock, opened in to serving traffic to/from Manchester along the Bridgewater canal from 1773 until 1972, when Duke's Dock was partly infilled. The pedestrian bridge was only added in September 2007 – I suspect the canopy is a reference to the fact the dock was covered, with loading/unloading taking place inside warehouses.
I like the way the wind turbine on the left, outside
ACC Liverpool, is mirrored by another use of wind power: a ship's mast mounted in the ground.
The green-domed building on the far bank of the Mersey is Birkenhead Town Hall. The brick tower to the right, behind the mast, is the lift-tower of Hamilton Square underground station. The lower red, arched structure is the walkway at Woodside ferry terminal.
