Stanlow Oil Refinery, Ellesmere Port, from near J15 of the M56 motorway, Cheshire, UK, 17 August, 2008
My father worked here when I was a child, before following the oil industry to Norway. An aspect of that didn't occur to me until writing this caption: as a piping engineer my father was involved in the building phase of the refinery; I grew up with it always being there, so I hadn't realised it was brand new in the early 1970s.
The installation now has a storage capacity of two million tonnes, both of crude oil and petrochemical products, 12 million tonnes of which are processed here each year. It supplies 3 million tonnes of petrol (and a further 3½ million tonnes of diesel), plus 2 million tonnes of aviation fuel, so is fairly important to the regional economy. |
