Maybe it was delerium triggered by the effort of the final ascent, but once on the millstone grit plateau, I was struck by the sheer size of the sky, with no higher peaks immediately apparent on the wide horizon. The trig. pillar on the right had attracted a cluster of people, but the cruciform summit shelter to the left (built in 1953) remained unused in the sunny weather. The pile of stones between the two is just that: a cairn of no especial (known) significance. It could be something to do with the Iron-Age hillfort built by the Brigantes defending against Roman invaders in the 1st Century CE, but I doubt it. |
