The Conder Valley seen from near Little Fell Farm, Quernmore, near Lancaster, Lancashire, UK, 29 June, 2008
It may seem odd that this long, broad
valley merely accommodates two narrow streams (the River Conder flowing left to right and Rowten Brook flowing top to bottom across the centre of this image, meeting at Conder Mill Farm's millpond, in the foreground), but until the last Ice Age this was the course of the Lune. Glacial moraines still dominate the valley floor – note the stepped terraces towards the middle and right of the image, beside Conder Mill Farm and Lee End Farm.
Caton Moor wind farm, on the horizon above this caption, is ~8 km away, to the north-east. The flagpole and tower of
St. Peter's Church, near(-ish) Quernmore is just visible behind a wood in the Conder Valley, whilst the tiny core of
Quernmore village itself is towards the right of the image, south-east of here. The large hill between the two is today's destination, Clougha, rising to 413 m
asl at
Clougha Pike.
