The fourth Earl of Sefton bought the Abbeystead estate in 1887, for its beautiful location and grouse moors. However, within a century the seventh and last Earl of Sefton, Sir Hugh Molyneux (1898-1972), died and the estate is now owned by the Duke of Westminster.

The Earl's widow, née Josephine Gwynne (1903-1980), nick-named 'Foxy', was an American former fashion model and friend of the Duchess of Windsor.
