Loyn Bridge, 20-30 m further down the road is the only substantial crossing point of the River Lune for ~10 km in either direction, which explains the presence of this Norman motte-and-bailey castle. The importance of the crossing obviously hasn't diminished, as shown by the presence of a twentieth century 'pillbox' defending the road.
