Main entrance, Old Technical School, Warrington, UK, 13 August, 2007
The Palmyra Square façade of the old Technical School is Grade II Listed, but as the sign indicates, the building, most recently occupied by the Warrington Borough Treasurer, is for sale, and at least one plan involves partial demolition of the complex for conversion to apartments.
The ceramic detailing below the first-floor windows is unfortunately indistinct in this image, but each panel features the name of a 'father of modern science': Francis Bacon (1561-1626), philosopher and statesman, effectively invented modern scientific methodology; Joseph Priestley (1733-1804), a natural philosopher with (I think) a particular link to Warrington, discovered oxygen (surely a relief to the world's population, who must have been quietly turning blue); and Sir Isaac Newton (1643-1727) was... well, I certainly hope you recognise that name. |
