Statue of T.E. Ellis, Stryt Fawr, Bala, Gwynedd, UK, 11 August, 2007

The statue itself is fairly attractive, but the subject has my admiration too.

Thomas Edward Ellis MP (1859-1899) was born and educated in Bala before attending the University of Wales, Aberystwyth (as did I) and Oxford University.
Two years after graduation, he was elected to Westminster as Liberal MP for Merionethshire – there's a bas relief of the Houses of Parliament on the statue's plinth. Within four years he had become a renowned advocate of Welsh issues (including the campaign for a National Library), calling for home rule by a Welsh legislative assembly; he became leader of Cymru Fydd, a movement with that aim, working with David Lloyd George. However, he was obliged to withdraw in 1892 when he joined the Gladstone government, becoming Chief Whip two years later.
As the dates above indicate, he died in 1899, aged only 41.
