Parliament of Rooks, Dodson's Hill, near Ingleton, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, UK, 26 May, 2007
Literally hundreds of the crows, presumably the populations of several separate rookeries, had gathered around a seemingly arbitrary point on the lower slopes of Gragareth as if meeting in a government assembly. This phenomenon (which was considered an omen by several historical cultures) may be the reason for the collective noun for Rooks: a parliament. |
