As explained with the previous image, a vadose (not water-filled) cave develops by dissolving a trench into the floor of a previous phreatic (water-filled) passage. However, it doesn't necessarily cut down absolutely vertically, as there'll be a tendency to preferentially erode along any lines of weakness such as joints in the massive limestone. |
