Also designed by the prominent architect Sir Decimus Burton, the light is 9m (30') asl, and is the companion of the taller Upper ('Pharos') Lighthouse (see previous image). An approaching vessel lining up the lights would find the deep water channel at the mouth of the River Wyre.

As his given name indicates, Sir Decimus was the tenth child in his family. In addition to laying out the civic heart of Fleetwood, he designed London Zoo, Hyde Park and the Palm House at Kew.
