Views like this may be one reason why Whernside is said to be many people's least favourite of the Yorkshire Three Peaks.
Having climbed the first 'step' in the ridge (not counting the ascent to the ridge, of course), I'd thought myself rather closer to the summit; seeing the path stretch onwards beyond the horizon is never encouraging.
