The Italianate/French Renaissance manor house was built in 1863 for Sir James Kay-Shuttleworth, a social-reforming doctor who'd treated cholera in Manchester, and was enlarged 1893.
Since 1910, the driveways to the house have hosted the thrice-annual Barbon Hill Climb motoring event, which has an average gradient of 1-in-12 over 800 m.
