This causeway was the railway line from Lancaster's main station at Green Ayre to the port of Glasson Dock, with a branch to Castle station. The disused line is now the main cycle route linking the Marsh to the city centre (hence the access to Millennium Bridge), whilst Green Ayre is a park and Castle station is now on the West Coast main line from London-Scotland.
