Like Calder Vale, the tiny, very rural yet industrial settlement of Oakenclough developed around the River Calder, which powered a paper mill. It's known that a bankrupt farmer and paper manufacturer sold a mill here in 1827 (to John Jackson, brother of Calder Vale's Richard & Jonathan), so the complex is at least that old.
