I'd have thought this stone bridge a little excessive merely as access for those operating the lock, but I suppose it's always had the dual purpose of allowing the local farms' livestock to cross, and if a bridge had to be somewhere, it makes sense to have incorporated it into an existing construction site, namely the lock itself.
