Obviously, wooden components need to be replaced occasionally, but I always think of canals as a product of an earlier age, so the sight of brand new lock gates somehow didn't fit my world view.
According to British Waterways, they're made from FSC-certified European Oak, and can be expected to last twenty years – not as long as I'd have thought.
