No doubt this is a named entrance (one of nineteen) to the Gaping Gill cave system, but I'm afraid I don't know which. It's right by the main footpath, anyway, and could conceivably be a hazard to the oblivious and small children.
This image gives the impression it's water-filled, with objects floating on the surface, but those objects are suspended in mid-air on cobwebs, and the shaft is deeper than I could see in daylight.
