Fell Beck, by Gaping Gill, Ingleborough, Yorkshire Dales National Park, UK, 30 April, 2006

The steeper slopes of Ingleborough are sandstone, which doesn't readily dissolve and which can therefore carry surface streams. As such watercourses reach the lower plateau of soluble limestone, they vanish underground, at first following joints only a couple of metres beneath the surface and reemerging in places, as here, but then finding/cutting deeper vertical channels, like Gaping Gill.
