Levers Water dam, near Coniston Old Man, Cumbria, UK, 23 April, 2006
I'm not entirely sure why the reservoir was constructed, nor when, but I'd guess it was intended to provide a reliable, year-round source of power for water wheels, avoiding both floods and droughts.
It certainly wasn't for drinking water; as recently as the 1970s the reservoir's water was contaminated by sulphur from old mine workings. |
