Roeburndale, near Wray, Lancashire, UK, 17 April, 2006
As the unvegetated area indicates, the River Roeburn frequently experiences high flood flows carrying large volumes of substantial bed material (my PhD research was on almost exactly this subject in the neighbouring catchment on Caton Moor, but I won't bore you or myself with figures). This causeway is a ford occasionally, and the fences are, quite sensibly, hinged to swing vertically to allow the passage of floating debris. |
