Air shafts, Blea Moor, near Whernside, Yorkshire Dales National Park, UK, 20 November, 2005
I couldn't identify these features at the time, but on the map it's clear that they mark the line of the Blea Moor Tunnel on the Settle-Carlisle railway line. The tunnel is 2.4 km (1.5 miles) long, which would have been a problem for the passengers of steam trains, so air shafts were included in the design. |
