Water is abstracted from the Lune at this point and piped across the catchment divide into Wyresdale, thereby supplementing the water supply of a different, rather large, area of Lancashire.
Just out of shot is a fish ladder; in monitoring stocks of migratory fish, the Environment Agency logged more than 2,000 salmon and sea trout passing in 1996. Because of this monitoring, canoeists visiting Halton rapids (immediately downstream) are not permitted to approach the Weir.
