The lens has compressed apparent distances, but Middle Brow Top farm, on the horizon, is over 2½ km from St. Peter's Church (see previous image), which stands alone (apart from the adjacent primary school) 1½ km from Quernmore itself.
I presume this was because locals tended to be Methodists (the hamlet has a chapel and post office but no pub) and the Church of England was less welcome. There are several local examples of roads having been built around the fields of powerful landowners who refused permission for more direct routes; perhaps they were similarly obstructive about making land available for a church.
