The obelisk in the square outside the gate (from memory, I think it's a war memorial) is probably on the site of the long-gone Market Cross. However, the mediæval fish slabs remain from the historical market square.
The 13th Century village which had developed around the Priory in the foregoing century covered only 9 ha (22 acres) behind the defensive wall.
