The hospital closed in about 2000. Whilst the premises to the south-west of Quernmore Road have been partially demolished and redeveloped as a housing estate, the main building, built as a psychiatric hospital in 1882, remains. I have very mixed feelings about this. It's an impressive building, with obvious architectural merit, and should be saved from the bulldozers. Conversely, it represents profound unhappiness for thousands of people over the course of more than a century, and I wouldn't regret it being torn down.
