Plain speaking

I think I've identified why I particularly dislike business-speak: it's the misguided impression that it's somehow witty.

For example, yesterday I discovered from a vendor that IBM's term for web technology which takes effect at the point of use – PHP or Web 2.0 stuff – is "on the glass". Once, someone must have thought that was clever, and it must have impressed a bored audience, who subsequently used it in their own Powerpoint slideshows, thereby elevating a feeble throwaway line into standard jargon. It's perpetuated by speakers wishing to identify themselves as part of 'the club' (i.e. it becomes an issue of bonding), yet it's just painful, and alienating to any listener confident enough to question the emperor's clothes.
