If I set up a .htaccess file to serve a custom 'Error 404' (page not found) page, but mistype the name of that 404 page (so the server can't find it), will the server explode?

No, you'll get something saying to the effect that there was a problem getting the 404 page.

Indeed. I've had "Error 500: Internal Server Error. Additionally the server encountered a 500: Internal Server Error when trying to display the error page" (or words to that effect) before.

Hmm. 'Error 767: Sense of humour failure encountered in techie readers'. ;)

I know (it's my job) that the literal response to an unfound Error 404 page is innocuous, but isn't it compelling to imagine the server's confusion? ;)
