Creeping corporatisation

The University's Academic Registrar retires in September, 38 years after arriving.  She's being replaced by a 'Director of Governance and Planning'.
I don't know how I feel about that.  Does the title matter?

On a slightly different matter: it occurred to me this week, preparing for the graduation ceremonies, that as a teenager reading the university-based novels of Graham Greene, Tom Sharpe and David Lodge, I never dreamt I'd work in a university myself, even less a collegiate one with SCRs, JCRs, quads and uniformed porters.

Comments

Ours is the 'Registrar and Secretary', which makes it sound like the university doesn't have enough money to emply a secretary for the registrar.

It does matter, because although the job description won't change much, I think it's important for a university to describe the role in a way that privileges the academic side of the administration she does.

She'll be a hard act to follow, and although I don't know her well enough to go along to any of the do's, I'll be raising a glass to a really first-rate administrator and ambassador.
