The next stage?

One of the maxims I repeat a little too frequently* is that if cats had thumbs, they'd be able to operate tin openers themselves, so would have no further use for humans.

Via Neil Gaiman's archives, I've just discovered that some cats do have usable thumbs.

*: Not deliberately, of course; I simply forget who I've already told.

I'm sure I've also told you numerous times about Zack, the little black kitten with thumbs :) He could pick up pencils, but usually ended up juggling them awkwardly and with a very intent look on his face like he was absolutely set on mastering this very useful art of - ooh! Shiney thing on stick and feathery - *pounce*

I have a polydactyly cat. She's quite adept at using the extra digits like opposable thumbs. Rather than picking up an object with her mouth, she will often pick up objects with her paws, which she then transfers to her mouth anyway.

Zack... nope, sorry; that familiar doesn't sound, er, familiar.

Sadly he wasn't my familiar, but Hellen's, when she and her kittens moved in with me for 6 months. He will breed no super-cats however, as they had him fixed!
