Really integrating transport

One of the better ideas for reducing traffic in the Lancaster area is a tram/light railway network.  It's still only at the stage of Greens talking about it in local newspapers (though one of them is a professor of transport geography), but here's something planners might like to consider.

In Vienna, materials needed to maintain the tram system are transported by the tram system, in container cars.  There's a proposal to use the same technique to carry goods for local companies, transport refuse, and even carry post.

Manchester already has trams, of course, so it'd be great if this could be investigated.

Several of the bars in York now have goods delivered by bicycle, mainly because it's actually quicker due to many of York's streets being closed to motor traffic during the day.

Lancaster used to have a tram system. The depot was where the car park is opposite what used to be The Alex. It didn't last very long though - only about a decade or so, I'm not sure why, but I've got some stuff in a book about it somewhere if you want me to dig it out...

Yes, the rails were only ripped up relatively recently. I'm guessing it was around the same time as the one-way system was established and the city centre was pedestrianised, but that is a guess! Do you know whether there any remnants?

The consequence of that policy is that it's as if there never was a tram network, and a new one would have to built from scratch.

I don't, but I'll have a hunt. I was hoping that the recent roadworks on South Road would turn up some traces of trammage. I've a photograph somewhere of the tracks going all the way up to the Pointer.
